Kindness in Motion: Health Room Support and Wheelchair Donation in Purwokerto

At the health room of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman in Purwokerto, staff regularly assist students who faint or feel unwell due to the heat or underlying medical conditions. Among those receiving care are international students from Zimbabwe, Uganda, Japan, and Thailand—young individuals full of promise, compassion, and the drive to make a difference in their communities.

Their presence inspired us to take meaningful action. This wheelchair donation is not merely the provision of a mobility aid—it is a gesture of solidarity and hope. By standing beside these students in their time of need, we are not only offering support, but also planting seeds for future friendship and cross-cultural service partnerships.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Club of Omagari Akita, Japan (District 2540), represented by Rotarian Masamitsu Sasaki, for generously donating this wheelchair. It will serve as an essential resource for emergency needs on campus and will also be part of a broader commitment to inclusive and responsive service. In the coming weeks, we will collect user testimonials to better understand its real-world impact.

But the journey doesn’t end here. Additional wheelchairs will be distributed to schools for children with special needs and to nursing homes throughout Central Java and surrounding areas. This initiative is led by Rotary Club of Purwokerto Satria, under Club President Rotarian Fuatman, and Rotary Club of Purwokerto, under Club President Rotarian Sista Maheni, for the Rotary Year 2024–2025.

A special moment will take place on May 14, when I, DG Daniel Surjadi, will briefly disembark at Purwokerto Station during a transit stop on board KAI Taksaka 46, with special permission from the train conductor, to formally hand over the wheelchair to our fellow Rotarians.

Because kindness knows no boundaries—and sincere service always finds its way.

Let us keep moving forward—together, for those in need, and for a future built on compassion and inclusion.
