Sejak September 2024, Rotary Club Tangerang memulai rangkaian proyek bertajuk "Read for a Better Life".

Dua minggu kemudian, mereka kembali.

Seeing the World More Clearly: A Story from Pinang Health Center

That morning, the atmosphere at the Health Center in Pinang, Tangerang, felt different. Shy smiles and quiet giggles from children filled the waiting area. They weren’t there for a usual check-up, but for something that could change how they see the world—literally.

Since September 2024, Rotary Club of Tangerang has been running a series of projects under the theme "Read for a Better Life." A simple yet powerful initiative: free eye exams and eyeglasses for children in need. Previously held at elementary schools, this time the project came directly to the local Public Health Center (Puskesmas) to reach even more children from different backgrounds.

With our trusted partner, Optik Timur, professional eye checks were conducted using proper equipment. Children—pre-selected by the Puskesmas for suspected vision issues—were examined carefully and patiently. Some were shy, others giggled when a light was shined into their eyes. But all of them felt special, because that day, they were the main focus.

After the check-up, each child got to pick their own eyeglass frame. Not just for function, but to boost their confidence, too. One little boy quietly said, “I’ll choose the blue one… it looks like the hero from the cartoon I watch.”

Two weeks later, they came back—this time with a new sparkle in their eyes. Their glasses were ready. Handed over at the same Puskesmas, the glasses brought smiles not only to the kids but also to their proud parents and the volunteers who had walked this journey with them.

For many of us, reading a book or seeing a classroom whiteboard is something we take for granted. But for these children, it’s a game-changer. Now, they can follow lessons more clearly, read stories more smoothly, and—most importantly—dream a little bigger.

Rotary Club of Tangerang believes that quality education starts with the basics. Clear vision is one of them. And in every pair of glasses given, there’s a seed of hope: that their future can be brighter, more open, and full of color.

This is not just a project. It’s a story of care, of collaboration, and of how one small act can truly open eyes—both literally and figuratively.
