Celebrating the Spirit of Kartini through the Harmony of Gamelan: A Colorful Day with Bodro Sewu Cultural Community

ree

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, Rotary Club of Jakarta held a fellowship event titled "Gamelan Workshop" in collaboration with the Bodro Sewu Cultural Community at @bodro_sewu_gallery. The event was held in celebration of Kartini Day, aiming to honor the spirit of women’s empowerment while promoting the preservation of Indonesian culture. It was also designed to strengthen bonds among members through an enriching and joyful cultural experience.

Although the number of participants was limited to just 20, the atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and full of enthusiasm. The event was opened by Adit, who also introduced our new member, Ram Nurani, who recently transferred from the Rotary Club of Yangon, Myanmar.

We then enjoyed a fascinating presentation from Anya, a member of the Bodro Sewu Cultural Community. She shared the rich history and philosophy behind the gamelan — a traditional Javanese musical ensemble that reflects harmony, togetherness, and balance in life.

Afterward, participants were invited to try their hands at playing the gamelan. Though it seemed simple at first, it proved to be a delightful challenge. With teamwork and laughter, everyone managed to play two traditional Javanese songs — an achievement that brought smiles and applause.

Following the workshop, we shared a delicious traditional Javanese lunch: Nasi Liwet from Solo, a comforting meal that deepened the sense of togetherness.

The cultural journey continued with a hands-on session on how to wear jarik wiru, traditional cloth from the Solo and Yogyakarta regions. Participants not only learned the techniques but also the cultural values woven into each fold and pattern.

Several attendees were drawn to the beautiful batik and kebaya pieces displayed at the gallery. Touchingly, 10% of the proceeds from those sales were donated by the Bodro Sewu Cultural Community to the Rotary Club of Jakarta, as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Bodro Sewu Cultural Community for this meaningful and memorable collaboration. Special thanks to Jaka (@jakelput), the event coordinator and a fantastic MC who brought energy and warmth to the day. We also deeply appreciate the presence and support of friends from the Rotaract Club of Semanggi Jakarta (@racsemanggi), and Yeremia (@yeremia75haryanto), who took the time to join and participate wholeheartedly.

We were honored by the attendance of Evelyn Ocampo, Betty Abalos, and Juha from the Rotary Club of Jakarta Gambir, whose presence added to the joy and fellowship of the day.

More than just a music workshop, this was a celebration of unity — across generations, across cultures — echoing the spirit of Kartini in a way that felt alive, relevant, and heartwarming.
