Harvesting Peace in the Fields of Hope

In a small village in Thailand, farmers lived modestly. They worked hard every day in their fields, yet their income was barely enough to support their families. The prices of their crops were dictated by middlemen, and they had little choice.

One day, Spencer Leung arrived — a member of Rotary and a 2013 Peace Fellow — who is also the founder of Go Organics, Ltd. He didn’t bring money or food aid. Instead, he brought knowledge — about sustainable farming, ways to enrich the soil naturally, and how to grow crops without harming the environment.

Spencer and his team began working hand-in-hand with the farmers. They held workshops, listened to local challenges, and even worked alongside them in the fields. The farmers were shown that they were not alone, that their harvest had value, and that a global market was waiting for healthy, organic, and environmentally-friendly products.

Slowly but surely, change began to take root. The soil became more fertile, yields improved, and more importantly — Go Organics helped open direct markets that connected farmers to buyers who valued natural products. Prices became fair, and the farmers began to earn a sustainable income.

But more than just money, something even greater grew in those fields: confidence, self-reliance, and peace. Farmers who once competed with each other began to collaborate. The community became stronger, knowing that when the land is cared for with love and the harvest is shared with fairness, not only are bellies filled — but hearts are, too.

The message is simple: peace isn’t built only through treaties or speeches. It grows from the soil, through cooperation, and the courage to share hope.

As a member of Rotary, Spencer Leung demonstrates that by combining humanitarian values, knowledge, and a global network, we can help small farmers rise — and together, we can sow the seeds of peace that the world will one day harvest.
